Born Katherine Booth, the daughter of George Booth of Chester, a cousin of Sir George Booth, first Baron Delamere. As a young woman she was twice painted by Kneller, and at the age of eleven she danced with James Scott, Duke of Monmouth, who told her that she would one day be "the finest dancer in England." Her marriage to Captain James Howard (1698) took her to London and Court, where William III - who seemed to have taken a fancy to her -- altered the old compliment from "England" to "Europe"....
